Shockoe Slip & Bottom

Richmond: Virginia's Vibrant Capital

Welcome to the new center of Richmond’s creative economy: historic, well-positioned Shockoe Bottom.

Building on previous planning efforts, including the recently completed downtown plan, the city is dedicated to revitalizing and re-imagining this historic corridor and neighborhood through  five strategies:

Main Street Station Train Shed Rehabilitation

Construction estimated to begin in May, 2013, taking two years and re-opening in the Spring of 2015. The space will serve as a new Welcome Center, an indoor market and will have leasable space for restaurants and retail.

Shockoe Market Square

Construction on new public square at the 17th Street Farmers' Market site is slated to begin as early as late 2013. The new urban square would serve as an open air market as well as mutl-purpose community gathering place.

17th Street Revitalized Market Streetscape

Plans include eliminating the current Farmers' Market structures, widening existing sidewalks to accomodate outdoor dining and undergrounding overhead utilities. The design process begins in February 2013.

Improved Connectivity in Shockoe

To improve connectivity from the Main Street Station Multimodal Transportation Center to Main, Cary, Dock Streets and the Virginia Capital Trail, funding is being secured for necessary streetscape improvements and amenities.
